MIS WEEK 3

                                             Management and Information Systems

Week 3 Lecture.-

On Monday morning I attended my first lecture in London Southbank University, which was held by the lecturer Bilal Haider. I was quite nervous  because I had not attended his lectures before and got a bit confused as well, however, the teacher was friendly so I sat down with more confidence. Basically the topic of the lecture was Managing IS Infrastructure and Services.

On my personal point of view it was a really interesting lecture as in the beginning a video was shown on the big screen related to the topic which was going to be spoken, it was like a briefing of what is going to be the main topic. The lecturer started it with the explanation of different computer types and what are they specially used for. For example, the supercomputers are used specifically for methodical research. Workstations are typically used for engineering, medical and graphical design. Servers are the computer types which provide access to applications, files and databases. Finally the personal computers which are used for what they are already called, the main reason for explaining specifically about these types of computers was because I found it really interesting as before this lecture I had no idea of the usage of different types of computers. Apart from this, the lecturer explained us what are the components of an IS infrastructure such as hardware, software, DBs as some of them for the transmission and storage of data. The teacher made a good comparison between the Systems software and the application software as nowadays there are people using both for different kinds of reasons. I learned about the computer networking which means the sharing of services of informations throughout the internet as well as knowing what the Internet actually is and also about the famous World Wide Web or WWW. An interesting fact was that I learnt that WWW is not the internet but uses the internet. I also learnt about different types of computer networks such as, Private Branch Exchange PBX, Personal Area network PAN, Wide Area Network WAN and many more. The last thing he explained us was about the issued with managing the IS infrastructure which were, the software obsolesce, storage need, space and facility requirements, the energy consumption and demand fluctuation.

Overall it was a really nice class as it was not just a simple lecture, it was a bit more dynamic with short explanations and some of them in the videos so it was a nice first experience and will be looking forward to attend more lectures like this one in order to achieve my course goals.

Week 3 Lab Session.-

On Tuesday afternoon I attended my first lab session with Miss Susie Wolstenholme. The lab session consisted of doing a group project and knowing the basic steps to use Excel.

In the lab session I learnt the basic stuff of how to use Excel for small tables being it for a trip, for working out hours and money.

In conclusion I liked very much this class as after finishing the exercises I was give the chance to write my very first Blog sharing the experience gained in the classes of this week, something which was too much fun and speaking about Miss Susie, it was nice working with her as she was really very helpful and understanding since the moment I entered the class. Looking forward to attend more classes like this one.

Week 3 Group Discussion.-

As soon as I had entered the room, I was given a group of 4 students, Charlene, Linxuan, Richard and myself as the forth member. The task given by the teacher was to look for any company which has IT problems and look for ways to improve it. After discussing it with my team members we came to the decision to speak about the H and M website and App which has many problems and the online reviews are the main evidences to it. So we decided to make a WhatsApp group of the four of us to discuss further stuff and see what to do next.
